How does the nursing home choose room mates?
Are any sort of pets allowed? If not, and if pets are important to your loved one, are their animals that
regularly visit the home (e.g., therapy dogs, or perhaps the home has a fish tank or atrium with birds).
What are the policies on TV, radio, phone calls, and visitors?
Dining
Sample the meal. Are the meals attractive and appetizing? Is the food served in the dining room what’s listed on
the posted menu?
Is the dining room attractive, clean, and free of unpleasant odors?
Is the hot food hot and the cold food cold?
Are fresh or frozen vegetables and fruits used?
How are those needing special diets accommodated?
How are those who cannot eat in the dining room accommodated?
Are visitors allowed to join residents for meals?
How does the staff treat those who need help eating? Are they rushed through their meal, or are they given
enough time?
Are there menu choices if the resident cannot eat or does not want what’s on the main menu?
Are snacks available?
Is the kitchen area clean and do the staff handle food properly? Are food prep areas separate from waste
areas?
Leisure and other Activity
Are there activities posted frequently that cover a wide range of interests?
Do the staff encourage residents to participate in activities?
What alternate activities are available to those who are unable to leave their rooms?
Are computers with Internet connections available so that residents have access to email?
Are their worship services available?
Is there a place for private visits?
What sort of services are available for those who want their hair cut, their nails done, etc.
Is the resident lounge comfortable and big enough for those who want to watch TV or just sit and visit?
Is there other leisure equipment available?
Staff and Service Issues
Watch the staff interact with the residents during meal times, activities and other times. Are they respectful
of the residents?
How many staff are available during the day, evening or night?
Are the staff certified? For example, how many are certified nursing assistants (CAN’s) and how many are
registered nurses (RN’s)?
Is there a doctor on the staff?
Can residents use their own doctors, dentists, pharmacists and other professionals, or must they use the one
associated with the nursing home facility?
